Apple WWDC 2023: A Look at the Key Announcements

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference began on Monday with a keynote talk that showcased everything new in the company's device portfolio. WWDC has always been where Apple gives us the first look at new software for iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, and Macs. However, Apple also unveiled new hardware this year.

The big news was the introduction of the Apple Vision Pro, dubbed a "new kind of computer" by Tim Cook at the presentation. However, with the release of the MacBook Air and other Mac hardware, including new silicon, as well as software changes, no area of Apple's ecosystem was left unattended.

Here are some of the key announcements that were made at WWDC 2023:
  • Apple Vision Pro: The Apple Vision Pro is the company's response to the race for AR and VR headsets. It's a personal display on your face with all the UI touches you'd expect from Apple, as well as an operating system that appears to be a hybrid of iOS, MacOS, and TVOS. And it will not be inexpensive: The Apple Vision Pro costs $3,499 and will be available early next year.
  • Macbook Air 15: Apple has revealed a new MacBook Air 15, which is a larger version of the MacBook Air 13 that was released last year. The MacBook Air 15 is powered by an M2 chip and has a battery life of up to 18 hours. Configurations can include up to 24GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage, with prices starting at $1,299 (or $1,199 with a student discount).
  • MacStudio with M2: A new Mac Studio with Apple's newest silicon has arrived. The updated model is equipped with either an M2 Max chipset or the new M2 Ultra chipset, which is essentially two M2 Max chips merged, allowing for up to 192GB of memory.
  • M2 Ultra with Mac Pro: Apple lost no time in revealing that its new high-end desktop Mac Pro model will also include the M2 Ultra. All of the M2 Ultra enhancements are carried over to the new Mac Pro, including support for up to 192GB of RAM.
  • iOS 17: iOS 17 has numerous quality-of-life enhancements, and the iOS 17 developer beta is currently available for download. Finally, you may look through your Messages. Swipe on individual messages to respond, and voice notes will be transcribed.
  • iPadOS 17: iPadOS 17 adds more controls to widgets, which not only display more information at a glance but also offer more interactive buttons to operate your smart home or play music. The Health app now has more interactive personal data, including enhanced sleep and exercise visualisation, thanks to iPadOS 17.
  • MacOS Sonoma: The notion of introducing more widget capabilities in MacOS Sonoma continues from WWDC. Sonoma also has several gaming enhancements, such as a new gaming mode that prioritises CPU and GPU to increase frame rate. Apple is focusing on immersion with reducing latency for wireless controllers, speakers, and headphones. In addition, the business is courting developers with game development kits and Metal 3. The biggest gaming news is that famed game creator Hideo Kojima's masterwork Death Stranding will be released on Macs later this year. "We are actively working to bring our future titles to Apple platforms," Kojima remarked during his WWDC keynote address.
  • AirPods and audio upgrades: Apple has made a few changes to its audio products. AirPods will include Adaptive Audio, which blends noise-cancelling with adaptive audio to drown out bothersome background noise while allowing critical noises to pass through, including as automobile horns or bike bells. It will also go through voices if someone initiates a chat in person.
  • WatchOS 10: The next Apple Watch operating system upgrade. Widgets are now accessible from your home screen in a stack; simply use the digital crown to scroll between them. This year, Apple has focused on cycling, boosting workouts by displaying functional threshold data, an important indicator for riders. It also links to bike sensors through Bluetooth, and there's a new full-screen mode for iPhones that lets you use it as a full-screen while pedalling.

Overall, WWDC 2023 was a major event for Apple. The company announced a number of new software updates, new hardware announcements, and new developer tools and resources. These announcements are sure to have a significant impact on the tech industry.
