Elon Musk is being investigated by the FBI in connection with his Twitter transaction

He is being investigated by the FBI in connection with his $44 billion buyout of Twitter.

The information comes from a court file made public last Thursday regarding the latest in the billionaire's continuing legal battle with the social network.  While the petition stated that he was being investigated, it did not specify the nature of the probe.

"This game of 'hide the ball' must end," the business stated in the court statement.  Musk did not react quickly to a request for comment.

Twitter, which sued the Tesla owner in July to force him to conclude the deal, said Tesla's attorneys claimed "investigative privilege" when refusing to turn over the information it sought.

It also stated that it had demanded months ago that Musk's attorneys reveal their interactions with federal authorities, but that they had not done so. The attorneys supplied a "privilege log" in late September, indicating materials to be withheld.

The log referred to copies of an email sent to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 13 - the American authority in charge of enforcing market manipulation laws.  It also referred to a slide presentation given before the Federal Trade Commission, whose primary objective is to promote antitrust legislation and consumer protection.

The court motion was made on the same day that the court granted a stay of proceedings to allow Twitter and Musk to complete the acquisition transaction.
